The Motive Internet Glossary

bookmark, bookmarking

Bookmarking is adding a website’s address (URL) to your personal index or list of favourites.

The value of bookmarks is recognised by services which store such lists, allowing users to backup this information or access it from a remote location.

Related terms: favicon

bookmark (anchor)

‘Bookmark’ is also the label given to a named anchor by Microsoft’s webpage authoring software: FrontPage.

Adding a bookmark creates an additional point on a webpage that can be linked-to. Often a bookmark will be added to a webpage beyond the first screen of content—the first fold. When a person links to a bookmark beyond the first fold, the webpage scrolls to the (vertical) location of the bookmark.

Bookmarks are used to create an in-page table of contents, and identify blog comments.

Related terms: above-the-fold, anchor, hyperlink
