Version control is a system established to manage the updating and distribution of information.
Providing a ‘last updated date’ is one way of making apparent to the user which version of a webpage they are viewing. Use a format that avoids confusion due to varying international formats, e.g. 6 Dec 2004 (rather than 06/12/04).
As a webpage can be updated more quickly than its print-based equivalent, this often gives rise to issues of version management—ensuring that those accessing information are able to identify the most recent/accurate material.
An issue that can further complicate web-based version control is that of browsers storing pages and images in memory (cache). A user may visit a page frequently but not see recent changes.
