MarineVille, Heka and Pumice

Friday 2 Nov 2001 @ Kings Arms

Tonight brings more evidence that New Zealand's underground guitar-based stock will not be requiring the obituary many seem to be prematurely foisting upon it. Three bands from three different cities, three fine styles and vitality to burn.

*****

Marineville have got the rough end of the stick, playing late to a shrinking audience, and two broken strings inside the first song brings an irritable response from the group. They gradually recover from the slow start and prove their solid Wellington rep is deserved.

A strong melancholic streak is present, countered by a determination to avoid the simple self-pity of lesser groups, with elements of noise, sad-assed country and indie rock making an appearance. But it's the straight songs that really shine.

By the time they shut up shop after 2am, a tired but well-satisfied bunch head off, having witnessed the diverse pleasures this country can provide - that is, if one is prepared to look.
