MarineVille and The Timeless Sounds

Friday 5 Oct 2001 @ Bodega
hen a man at the bar leans over and writes on your notes: "Fuckin sweet bro I dig it" ~ that's impulse. MarineVille inspire this kind of reaction ~ they produce a beautiful mix of Pavement-style melancholic repetition within a Bailterspace head-filling wall of sound. They're like that guy/girl you like, but can never say anything to ~ that heady mix of excitement and regret. It's the minor chords that kill you.
While the new album is great, it doesn't compare to MarineVille live, where they tease out extra layers of melody and rhythm. After coming on stage all meek and humble-like, they got on to a sped-up versions of Zero Pilot, which brought on Birthday Party comparisons. Both guitarist Mark and bassist Stephen broke strings, keeping their indie instrument-shredding cred intact. Epic album-closer and crowd favorite Yoko Ono was almost breakbeat in its battle-me intensity, despite all of 50bpm. You know the gig's good when you don't realise that your cigarette has burnt to ash in the tray.
