Ready for the Dance

The debut from this Wellington, New Zealand trio starts off sounding like The Go-Betweens crossed with Tom Verlaine. But MarineVille soon reveal a moodier, free form look. Combining brittle dissonance with expansive noise crescendos, MarineVille’s Excursions privelages raw sound above song. Their prominent, ragged guitars rip through loose recitations and opaque musings, first amassing and then releasing vivid bursts of energy. If they’re self-consciously epic at times, the tendancy is offset by a pleasingly rough edge. Meanwhile, they leave themselves plenty of room to experiment. A promising start.
